When we were living in Texas, we knew we wanted a home with acreage so that we could raise our own livestock. Since most of what we do is online, we had the flexiblity to seek out lower cost of living areas. Which lead us to fall in love with a quaint home in rural Arkansas. Since then, we have expanded to a neighborhing lot for more grazing pasture.
As a family we have a deep love and appreciation for animals. As an expert dog trainer, I enjoy getting to know their personalities. And yes, they all have their own way about themselves. Just like people. With our busy lives and small budget, we decided to start out small with a few goats.
And instantly the whole family feel in love.
Thus, we then bought sheep and cattle also.
The main reason we wanted to raise livestock was to be able to enjoy fresh, healthly goats milk and get to a point where we can provide for others in need. As a family, we have enjoyed replacing our traditional cows milk uses with goats milk. Everything from creamer in our coffee to homemade ice cream and yogurt to making homemade goats milk soap. If you're considering getting milk goats, check out my blog on all the different ways you can use goat milk.
While we had the goats and sheep, we worked on the infrastructure to raise cattle. Which meant that we needed to do all the things too. First we secured more land for pasture grazing, then we worked the ground to ensure it was going to yeild a quality balanced diet for the cows. At the same time, we built and repaired fencing to a "cattle grade" type of fencing to ensure their safety. And if you've ever owned cattle, you know they drink a lot of water. So we needed to solve for water and shelter as well. It's been a fun and rewarding experience that we wouldn't have been able to do without our ministry partners.
